Case Study for Customer Location CA54:

Reservoir or Lake Use:
Industrial paper packaging plant wastewater treatment system.

System Overview and Reservoir:
This is a 2-pond, continuous discharge system to treat wastewater from an industrial paper packaging plant. The flow rate is 2.0 MGD, with 100% of the flow to Pond 1 (settling/separation), then to Pond 2 (primary/aeration). Total system detention time is 13 days. Pond 1 is 3 acres in area, 8 ft deep, 8M gallons, loading is 120 lbs of BOD/acre/day, and has no grid aeration. Pond 2 is 6 acres in area, 10 ft deep, 18M gallons, and has 210 hp of grid aeration that was operating 24 hours per day. Most critical discharge permit limits are: 30 mg/L BOD, 30 mg/L TSS, with no ammonia limit.

Reported Problem Before Installation:
Major objectives were to reduce the high energy costs and maintenance for aeration equipment in Pond 2, and eliminate short-circuiting.

Installation:
Date: June 2001, installed two (2) units equal to SB2500* with 24-hour electric kits into Pond 2. January 2004, upgraded both units to SB10000s with 24-hour electric kits.

Results:
Customer was able to reduce aeration hp/run time by as much as 75% with the two SB2500 units, running only 60 hp 24-hours/day instead of 210 hp. Energy savings gave a payback time of less than one year. With the SB10000 units, customer can now run one 15 hp aerator at the pond’s inlet and one 40 hp unit only a few hours per day. The upgraded SB10000 units continue to work well, allowing the plant to operate the ponds with minimal aeration. Furthermore, the wastewater treatment system was able to take a 10% Solar Tax Credit and accelerated Depreciation for their purchase of the SolarBees. Customer is very happy with the SB10000s.

Updated: 03/06/2007

SolarBee, Inc. (formerly a division of Pump Systems, Inc.) developed, manufactured, and installed this equipment, and adopted the name “SolarBee” for this technology in Sept, 2001.
