Case Study for Customer Location DE83:

Reservoir or Lake Use:
Facultative lagoon-based municipal wastewater treatment system for a population of 3,800.

System Overview and Reservoir:
The wastewater treatment system receives and directs 0.3 MGD into three ponds (four cells) operated in series, with the final effluent then directed to sand filters followed by continuous discharge to receiving stream. Total system detention time is approximately 120 days.
Cell #1: 7.7 acres, 5 ft operating depth, 11.8 MG capacity, no aeration, 85 lbs BOD/acre/day
Cell #2: 4.9 acres, 5 ft operating depth, 7.6 MG capacity, no aeration
Cell #3A: 5.5 acres, 5 ft operating depth, 7.8 MG capacity, no aeration
Cell #3B: 6.8 acres, 5 ft operating depth, 9.8 MG capacity, covered with Lemna sp. (duckweed)

Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation:
Main issue was severe odors from the primary cell (Cell #1). Although treatment plant is scheduled for $1M+ upgrade in 2006, residents were preparing to bring legal action against the town to force an immediate remedy for odor problems.

SolarBee Installation:
Date: April 2004, installed two (2) SolarBee SB10000 circulators in the primary cell; units were configured for odor-capping and 24-hour operation with onshore power. A fixed intake plate was installed for each unit because of the shallow depth of the pond.

Results:
Within three weeks after installation, the plant operator reported a significant decrease in odors.  Within three months after installation, the plant Superintendent confirmed the SolarBees’ success for complete odor control in Cell #1. The barrage of complaints from residents quickly ceased. Although initially skeptical that SolarBees would work, the Superintendent and the residents of the city are very satisfied with the results and very much appreciate the absence of noxious odors. The Superintendent is happy to discuss his experience with others.
